Participants will learn about basic epidemiology concepts, such as the basic reproduction number, and how these are affected by the structure of the networks in which we live. Dr. Meyers presented the lectures in this module in September 2019, at the start of flu season in the US and approximately three months before the first cases of COVID-19 were recognized in China.

Course description

This course brings new and synthetic thinking to the question of how life emerged from an abiotic world. It begins by examining the chemical, geological, physical, and biological principles that give us insight into origins of life research. We look at the chemical and geological environment of early Earth from the perspective of likely environments for life to originate.

Taking a look at modern life we ask what it can tell us about the origin of life by winding the clock backwards. We explore what elements of modern life are absolutely essential for life, and ask what is arbitrary? We ponder how life arose from the huge chemical space and what this early 'living chemistry' may have looked like.

Transmissions

Transmission is the Santa Fe Institute's real-time and ideas-based response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Many of our researchers are hard at work collaborating on the monitoring and modeling of the epidemic, the development of vaccines and tests, and seeking to project the socio-economic impact of the disease as well as plotting paths to recovery.

Based on a close monitoring of the global situation and the research of our own affiliated faculty and others, the Santa Fe Institute has decided to suspend visitor-related programs and public events through August, including the 2020 InterPlanetary Festival series, in a decisive effort to #FlattenTheCurve of COVID-19.

In light of this announcement, and to make for a more pleasant period of self-isolation, we are temporarily offering everyone a free e-version of InterPlanetary Transmissions: Genesis. This offer will remain active until April 30.

Complete the form below to receive a download link for your PDF, MOBI, or ePub. You’ll also be signed up to receive occasional e-newsletters from the InterPlanetary Festival.
